Opening of a database of life science patents related to research tools
The Japanese National Center for Industrial Property Information and Training launched on April 1, 2009 a new database of patents related to research tools.
The objective of the database is to provide information on patents related to research tools and their licensing conditions, to facilitate the use of research-related patents and to prevent disputes regarding the said patents.
The patents registered in the database are Japanese patents related to objects or methods used as tools in the field of life science research.

Opening of the trial version of a new patent search service
The Japan Patent Office (JPO) launched on March 24, 2009 the trial version of a new online service entitled the “Patent Search Portal Site”.
The aim of the Portal is to provide users with a selection of tools and services related to prior art searches. Available content include an introduction to prior art searches and to the related techniques, an outline of the various search strategies and of the basic concepts related to prior art, and a classification of the different search methods based on their function.

Publication of a new series of Patent Search Guides
The Japan Patent Office (JPO) has published a new series of “Patent Search Guides” in 13 technical fields, adding up to the 42 Guides published between 2004 and 2006.
Each Patent Search Guide concentrates on one technical field, providing valuable information on the available methods and tools for prior art searches and the like.
