Types of Trademark Search

Trademark Searches can be broadly divided into three types:
      1. Online Search
      2. Full Search
      3. Figure Search

Online Search

The Online Search is conducted through the database of the Patent Office in order to check whether a trademark identical to the trademark to be applied for has been registered or not. Such a search takes a short time and incurs a low expense; however, it does not allow for the search of similar (i.e. confusingly similar) trademarks, and can therefore be considered insufficient in order to determine the chances of registration of a trademark. As a consequence, in cases where several applications are considered we would recommend an Online Search, in order to narrow down the number of trademarks to be applied for.

Full Search

The Full Search is conducted through a database designed for trademark searches in order to check whether a trademark identical or similar (i.e. confusingly similar) to the trademark to be applied for has already been registered or not. In contrast with the Online Search, the Full Search makes it possible to search for similar trademarks, and therefore allows us to determine the probability that the trademark will be registered. As a consequence, we generally recommend a Full Search, as it is a more accurate way to conduct a Trademark Search.

Figure Search

The Figure Search is conducted in the case of a trademark/character with no appellation, in order to check whether a trademark identical or similar (i.e. confusingly similar) to the trademark to be applied for has already been registered. The required time and incurred cost is higher than in the case of an Online Search or a Figure Search.
