What is direct application?

This involves filing an application at the patent office of each country through a local agent. Most countries are members of the Paris Convention, and you can claim priority under the Paris Convention when filing a foreign trademark application within six months from the date of your trademark application in Japan.

What is priority under the Paris Convention?

If you apply for a trademark in one of the Paris Convention countries and then apply for the same trademark in a foreign country within six months, the examination will be based on the time of the first application. For example, if you file an application in a foreign country within six months of the filing date in your home country, the system treats that foreign application as having been filed on the filing date in your home country.
