The Japan-ASEAN Intellectual Property Joint Statement 2024 was adopted at the XNUMXth Japan-ASEAN Heads of Intellectual Property Offices Meeting held in Brunei on September XNUMXrd.
The full text of the ASEAN-Japan Intellectual Property Joint Statement 2024 (provisional translation) is provided below.
1. The Intellectual Property Offices of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Member States ("AMS IP Offices") and the Japan Patent Office ("JPO") (collectively, the "Partners") held their 14th Heads of Office Meeting on 3 September 2024 in Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei Darussalam.
2024. The Partners adopted the AMS IP Office JPO Intellectual Property Action Plan 2025-XNUMX, which includes efforts on strengthening the IP protection system, making examination procedures and practices more transparent and streamlined, improving IP management and information, utilizing IP, raising IP awareness, and developing human resources.
3. The Partners confirmed their continued support for the research projects being implemented by the Economic Research Institute for ASEAN and East Asia (ERIA), in particular the "Study on Brands" with the aim of increasing brand awareness and revitalizing local industries in ASEAN Member States, and the "Study on Patent Examination Practices for Hot Technologies (Pharmaceuticals and Related Fields)" with the aim of improving the predictability of patent examination outcomes in related technology fields.
4. The Partners acknowledged the report of the Japan-ASEAN Patent Experts Meeting, which summarized the discussions and outcomes of the 1st to 4th Japan-ASEAN Patent Experts Meetings. Based on the outcomes of the Japan-ASEAN Patent Experts Meetings, the Partners recognized the importance of further enhancing the transparency and predictability of examination practices regarding emerging technologies such as AI and IoT, publishing examination guidelines and cases, and strengthening the examination system. The Partners also recognized the need to correct mistranslations during the examination process and after grant of rights, confirmed that discovering mistranslations at an early stage of the examination process allows for flexible examiner dispositions, and understood the importance of establishing a mistranslation correction system to address mistranslations discovered after grant of rights.
