Facebook wraps up article usage negotiations with Australian media; some media excluded

On September 22, 2021, Facebook, Inc. (US) notified Australian press that they had stopped negotiating licensing deals relating to payment for articles.

Although Facebook has concluded the deals with most of the major Australian media firms, the Special Broadcasting Service, or SBS, has been left out in the cold. SBS is one of five main networks in Australia, and provides foreign language news.

In February 2021, the Parliament of Australia passed a bill requiring Facebook and Google LLC to pay Australian media firms for news articles.
